Abstract: People may follow different decision procedures depending on the number of choice options. I study a choice problem in which a decision maker behaves as if she applies either of the following two decision procedures to make a choice decision while she has a eal" preference ranking all choice options. When the number of options in a choice set does not exceed kL, a threshold number reflecting the degree of her focus, the decision maker follows the first decision procedure and applies her "real" preference to choose the most preferred in the choice set. When the number of options exceeds kL, she follows the second decision procedure according to which she first applies a rationale to eliminate some choice options from the choice set and then applies her eal" preference to make the final choice among the remaining choice options. kL is treated as unobservable for researchers and can be inferred from choice data.I identify the class of choice functions that are consistent with such decision procedures.
