Abstract: Developing countries are net importers of capital goods including machinery and equipment as well as high quality intermediate inputs. These imports are embedded with skill-complementary technology and exert substantial impact on the skill premium. Using China’s trade liberalization during 1997-2009 as a natural experiment, we quantify the causal effect that more capital import leads to higher skill premium. Moreover, evidence using firm-level survey shows that imported capital goods are skill-biased and firms with more capital imports have higher capital intensity, employ more skilled workers, pay higher average wages, and spend more on R&D.
