摘要：This paper studies the middle income trap by developing a general equilibrium trade model with three countries: an innovating north country, an adapting middle-income country, and an imitating south country. The mid-income country is sandwiched by the imitating south and the innovating north. It is shown that the south's chasing effect on the income gap between the North country and Middle-income country is non-monotonic, whereas the north's pressing effect is always effective. In addition, tariff reduction may sometimes amplify rather than reduce the income gap. Empirical evidence supports the findings.
