Abstract:We study how Chinese airlines price discriminate based on demand interventions generated by launch of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail system (the Launch) and the subsequent Wenzhou bullet-train collision (the Crash). We find that: Price dispersion increases by about 80% after the Launch, because airlines offer greater discounts to price-elastic consumers than to price-inelastic consumers; in contrast, price dispersion decreases by about 80% after the Crash, because airlines raise prices more for price-elastic consumers than for price-inelastic consumers. Overall, we find a positive correlation between competitive intensity and price dispersion. Unlike previous studies, our estimation is free of instrumental variables.
