ABSTRACT：Using a unique city-level panel on daily air pollution index (API) and fine-scale meteorological data over the period 2009-2013, this paper examines the existence and the magnitude of spatial spillover effects of air pollution in Chinese cities. We develop a spatial dynamic panel data model and use a spatial weights matrix that incorporates both physical distance and wind directions in the empirical analysis. We find that (i): there exist spatial spillover effects of air pollution in Chinese cities: with one-unit increase in API in a city’s neighboring cities the city’s API is likely to increase by about 0.4-0.5, depending on model specifications; (ii) without controlling for air pollution in neighboring cities in the regression analysis, coefficient estimates of other variables will be biased; (iii) by reducing fuel consumption, increase in gasoline price can effectively reduce air pollution concentrations; and (iv) high levels of precipitation and strong winds can mitigate air pollution, while the temperature effects on air pollution vary by time during a day.
