Abstract: Current research shows the importance of pecuniary reciprocity. Nevertheless, reciprocity in non-pecuniary dimensions e.g., image reciprocity, which plays a vital role in trade and labor relationships, has been ignored in current literature. This paper adapts a real-effort experiment to explore image reciprocity and its potential influence on effort provision. Our results show, first, people demonstrate positive image reciprocity – people are more likely to reward somebody who shows kind behavior in terms of image to them. Second, we find indirect positive image reciprocity-people are more willing to reciprocate somebody who has showed image kind behavior to a third party. However, no negative image reciprocity is found.
