摘要:This paper examines the impacts of environmental regulation on green patent innovation, using a panel data of Chinese listed firms during the 1990-2010 period. The environmental regulation is the mandatory participation in Cleaner Production Audit (CPA) programs enforced by the central government ofChina. Using a triple difference-in-difference method, our main findings suggest that the stringent environmental control leads to greater firm-level green innovation activities measured by both the number of green patents and the ratio of green patents relative to total number of patents. This positive regulation effect mainly occurs in the state-owned firms rather than private firms. Moreover, we estimate the effects of the CPA programs on green innovations by firm structure (i.e., parent company, subsidiaries, and joints & associates). The regulation contributes to statistically significant green innovation from subsidiaries and joints & associates, but not from parent company. Furthermore, we take a close look at which type of firm structure enrolled in the CPA program, and redefine the treatment groups by firm structure. When the treatment groups are constructed based upon only parent company enrolled in the CPA program, the innovation-stimulating effect of regulation is statistically significant for parent firms only, but not for subsidiaries and joints & associates. When the treatment groups are assigned to subsidiaries or joints & associates only, respectively, the regulation has a positive impact on green innovation of subsidiaries and joints & associates, but not on that of parent firms.
