Abstract

Previous research has found the contagion effect in corruption (Dong et al., 2012, Lee and Guven 2013; Gingerich et al., 2016), nevertheless the mechanisms underlying the contamination of corruption remain unexplored. In this paper, we varied various kinds of information relevant to corruption, which are the number (breadth)/the size (depth)/the maximum amount of corruption, exposed to participants in a laboratory experiment to testify how the salience of different information affects participants’ decisions to engage in corruption. Our results show that participants are more likely to provide a bribe and are more willing to provide a greater amount of bribe after they are informed the information regarding the number of corruption or the size of corruption, while the information on the maximum amount of corruption has limited effect. In addition, emotion data collected in the experiment reveal that the intensity of guilt is negatively related to participants’ decisions to involve in corruption. Our findings support that the channel of the contamination of corruption should attribute to the feeling of guilt related to social norms rather than a higher possibility to find a corrupt partner.

毛磊博士,中央财经大学保险学院副教授,2014年在法国国家科学研究中心（CNRS）和里昂二大下属经济理论与分析研究所（GATE）以最高荣誉获得经济学博士学位。毛磊博士的主要研究领域包括实验经济学、行为经济学、劳动经济学和激励理论，他的论文发表在Experimental Economics, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization等经济学领先SSCI期刊，并担任国家自然科学基金等多个项目主持人。
