Abstract:

This paper examines the effect of importing neighbors on firm's export behavior. We find that neighboring importer density positively affect firm export probability. This effect is more pronounced for domestic firms, larger firms and firms that export differentiated goods.

Conditional on exporting, neighboring importer density does not affect the volume of export or the subsequent survival rate, but it does increase firm's growth rate conditional on survival. We suggest that these results are consistent with the hypothesis that neighboring importers help firms to export through their networks in the destination market.

朱林可，上海财经大学商学院副教授，世界经济与国际贸易系系主任，比利时鲁汶大学经济学博士。主要研究领域为国际贸易实证研究，最近的研究话题涉及比较优势的来源，国际贸易中的信息问题，出口配额的分配效率等。论文发表于《Journal of International Economics》、《经济研究》等期刊。
