There has been a lot of media and industry hype for better price parity in recent few years. However, 2021 looked like a real banner year for the Australian battery industry. Many believe that large-scale consumer adoption is not far away. In 2021, we have seen notable price drops in emerging battery-based products such as electric vehicles and home storage systems, new consumer supporting incentives rolled out in most states, record high PV installations and skyrocketing petrol prices. The commonwealth and mots state/territory governments also announced ambitious targets and plans for a carbon-neural vehicle fleet that are consistent with Australia’s overall target of net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. However, even experts struggle to understand what assumptions underlie these targets as there are so many unknowns. In this presentation I ask and answer four questions: 1) how far are we from battery price parity? 2) what consumer supporting incentives do we have and what are justified? 3) can we achieve zero-net-emission fleet by 2050 (and other interim targets)? 4) at what cost? I conclude by outlining a number of areas that need urgent research.
